Here at SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline we see a lot of house fires both large and small.

Here are some tips to fire proof your home:

Access your equipment - make sure you have smoke detectors  inside bedrooms and on every level of your home.  Change the batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year.  Spring forward and Fall back time changes are good way to remember when to change your smoke detector's batteries.

Close the door prior to going to bed.  Half of the fatal home fires start between 11pm and 7am.  Shutting bedroom doors dramatically slows the spread of smoke, flames and heat.  This can buy you crucial time to get out of the house safely.

Have an Escape Plan for everyone including your beloved pets.  Identify at least 2 escape routes for each family member and practice twice a year.  If you have kids, make sure they know what the smoke alarm sounds like in case you cannot get to them to help them escape.  Practice their escape plan with them.

Never go back inside - you will risk smoke inhalation.  Wait for the trained professionals to help you when they arrive. Stay out and stay safe.

We want you to stay safe.

Please follow these tips to help Fire proof your home.
